San José Community Centers Provide Free Meals for Children through the Summer Food Service Program

Eligible children can receive free meals while school is not in session

SAN JOSE, Calif. (June 1, 2022)

Since 2010, San José community centers offer lunch and afternoon snacks at no cost to community youth during the summer, thanks to the City of San José Parks, Recreation and Neighborhood Services Department's (PRNS) participation in the Summer Food Service Program (SFSP).

Per the U.S. Department of Agriculture, SFSP ensures that low-income youth continue to receive nutritious meals when school is not in session. Seven San José locations are among the approved SFSP sites that will serve more than 200 million free meals to children 18 years and under throughout the United States this summer.

To receive free meals, youth must be enrolled at an on-site summer camp and meet the income guidelines for reduced price meals in the National School Lunch Program. Children who are part of households that receive Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), California Work Opportunity and Responsibility for Kids (CalWORKs), Kinship Guardian Assistance Payment (Kin-GAP), or Food Distribution Program on Indian Reservations (FDPIR) benefits are automatically eligible to receive free meals.
