San José’s biggest Independence Day bash is almost here — and while this year’s celebration at Lake Cunningham Park won’t feature the usual fireworks, the city is turning the setback into something totally new and exciting.
On Friday, July 4th, thousands of families are expected to gather at the park for an evening packed with live music, food trucks, family activities, and the first-ever drone light show in San José’s history.
Why the Switch?
Originally, the city planned a traditional fireworks display. But after a tragic warehouse explosion in Yolo County — where San José’s fireworks were being stored — city leaders quickly pivoted. Instead of canceling the show, they secured a cutting-edge drone display, bringing a safer, quieter, and eco-friendly way to light up the night sky.
The drone show kicks off at 9 PM, and it’s set to paint the sky with choreographed lights — all without the noise, pollution, or fire risks of traditional fireworks.
A Celebration for Everyone
Councilmember Domingo Candelas summed it up best:
“We’re going to have a great opportunity for families to gather. We’re going to have live entertainment, food trucks, activities, and an opportunity for families to come out and enjoy a safe and healthy atmosphere right here in the east side of San José.”
Expect more than 15 food vendors, plenty of music, and a lively community atmosphere that makes this Fourth about more than just the sky show.
Staying Safe This Fourth 🇺🇸
Alongside the big celebration, city leaders delivered a clear message: skip the illegal fireworks.
Mayor Matt Mahan reminded us that lighting your own fireworks doesn’t just put your family at risk — it ties up first responders when they’re needed most.
Fire Chief Robert Sapien, Jr. emphasized how fireworks overwhelm 9-1-1 calls and stretch emergency crews dangerously thin.
SJPD Deputy Chief Brandon Sanchez announced that police are using drones to spot and stop illegal fireworks this year. Already, more than 3,000 pounds of fireworks and 50 improvised explosive devices have been confiscated.
The takeaway? Enjoy the celebration, leave the fireworks to the pros (or in this case, the drones!), and help keep San José safe.
